Caroline Ashleigh Discusses Designating Antiques and Fine Art as Charitable Donations
Choosing to donate your collection of antiques and fine art can be a satisfying and important decision that enables your collection to be viewed and shared with future generations. The charitable donation process can be moderately complicated. As a result, many donors seek guidance from an experienced art appraisal or legal professional. Below, certified Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) Appraiser Caroline Ashleigh discusses benefits and requirements of the fine art and collectibles charitable contribution process.
Q: What are potential benefits to individuals that donate fine art and antiques?
A: Individuals who choose to donate collectible items, such as antique cars, paintings, sports memorabilia, and musical instruments, can benefit from a deduction of gift and estate taxes. In addition, donors avoid capital gains taxes on appreciated assets. As a general rule, if a collectible has appreciated throughout the time it has been your possession, a greater deduction on income taxes is granted.
Q: Where is the best place to donate fine art and antiques?
A: Donating to an appropriate public charitable organization can allow you to take full advantage of tax benefits. Examples include scientific, artistic, and religious not-for-profit groups.
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the appraisal process?
A: Obtaining an appraisal of a collectible from a certified professional determines your tax deduction through establishing your object’s fair market value. As a result of the Pension Protection Act of 2006, a qualified appraiser must meet a series of prerequisites, including designation from an approved professional appraisal association and documented experience and instruction in assigning value to category-specific art or collectible items without bias. At the conclusion of the appraisal, it is essential to verify that the report you are given is compliant with USPAP and Internal Revenue Service requirements.
